Alabama Posting Laws: How to Post Land

Posting land in Alabama means making it clear to visitors that they may not enter. The state's trespass definition talks about notice given in a conspicuous manner, and it names signs or purple paint as ways to do that. This guide explains what the statute says and how to put it to use.

What the law asks for on signs

Alabama's definition of entering or remaining unlawfully refers to posting in a conspicuous manner. In plain words, a person walking up to your land should be able to see the notice without searching for it. The statute we checked sets no letter height, no minimum sign size, and no spacing number for signs.

It also does not ask you to put your name on the sign. Even so, many owners add a name or phone number so a visitor knows who to contact. Our sign builder follows the state's sign rules, but you should read the current statute yourself before you rely on any sign.

Purple paint as an alternative

Alabama lets you use purple paint marks in place of signs. The definition says signs or purple marks, so you do not need a sign next to the paint. Each mark is a vertical line at least 8 in long and at least 1 in wide, with the bottom of the mark 3 to 5 ft above the ground.

Marks must be readily visible to anyone approaching. Spacing depends on the land. On forest land they can be no more than 100 ft apart, and on other land no more than 1,000 ft apart. Keep your marks closer than those limits where the ground is rough or brushy.

Practical tips

Sun and weather fade signs fast, so walk your boundary each season and replace any that are hard to read. Put signs at gates, road entrances and trail crossings, where people actually arrive. Take dated photos of your signs and paint marks. They make a useful record of when and where you posted.

Questions about posting land in Alabama

Do I need a sign if I use purple paint in Alabama?

No. The definition in the statute text we read says signs or purple marks, so paint can stand in for a sign. The marks have to follow the size, height and spacing in the statute: at least 8 in long, at least 1 in wide, and the bottom 3 to 5 ft above ground. Read the current text before you paint.

How far apart can Alabama purple paint marks be?

On forest land the marks can be no more than 100 ft apart. On other land the limit is 1,000 ft apart. The marks must also be readily visible to anyone approaching the land. Closer spacing is a good habit where trees or terrain block the view.

Does Alabama require my name on a no trespassing sign?

The definition we checked has no owner-name requirement and no minimum letter height. It asks for posting in a conspicuous manner. We did not verify Alabama's hunting permission rules, so check the current statute and the state's hunting rules before you rely on a sign for hunters.

This guide explains the law in plain words; it is not legal advice. We read the statute text on 2026-10-24. Laws change: check the current text here or ask your county or state wildlife agency.
