Arkansas Posting Laws: How to Post Land
Arkansas gives landowners a clear recipe for posting. Signs need certain words in large letters, and paint marks can replace signs if they use the right color and spacing. Rules differ a little for forest land and other land. This guide walks through both in plain words, using the figures in the statute.
What the law asks for on signs
Signs must bear the word posted or the words no trespassing, or both, in letters at least 4 in high. They must be readily visible to a person approaching. There is no owner-name requirement and no minimum sign size in the statute text we read. Only the owner or lessee may post the land.
Spacing and placement
Signs go around the boundaries and at each point of entry. On forest land they can be no more than 100 ft apart. On non-forest land, such as cultivated land, orchards, pasture and impoundments, the limit is 1,000 ft apart. A pasture with gates on several roads will need a sign at every one.
Purple paint
Paint is an alternative to signs, and no sign is needed alongside it. A Forestry Commission rule sets the color as light purple, exterior grade. Each mark is a vertical line at least 8 in long, with the bottom of the mark 3 to 5 ft high, readily visible. The statute gives no mark width.
On forest land, marks go on trees or posts, no more than 100 ft apart. On non-forest land, marks go on posts, no more than 1,000 ft apart and at each point of entry. The agency says it prescribes the paint but does not enforce it.
Practical tips
Choose one method for each stretch of boundary and keep it consistent, so a visitor never has to guess. Fresh paint fades and trees fall, so walk the line every year. Our research notes the figures come from an agency summary and rule text, so confirm the exact code sections before you rely on them.
