Florida Posting Laws: How to Post Land

Florida has one of the more detailed posting recipes. The statute asks for the owner's name, a set letter height, and a set spacing along the boundary. It also allows orange paint instead of purple. This guide explains the rules in plain words, using the figures in the statute.

What the law asks for on signs

Signs must carry the name of the owner, lessee or occupant. The words No Trespassing must appear in letters not less than 2 inches in height. The statute text we read lists no minimum sign size, so the letter height is the main measure. Our sign builder follows these sign rules, but read the current statute yourself.

Spacing and placement

Signs go not more than 500 ft apart along the boundaries of the land, and at each corner. Because the limit applies along every boundary, a long road frontage needs a row of signs, not one at the gate. Mark each corner, then divide each side into stretches shorter than 500 ft.

Orange paint, not purple

Florida has no purple paint rule. It allows international orange paint instead, with the bottom of the mark 3 to 5 ft above the ground. For painted notices, the letters must be no less than 2 in high and 1 in wide. On agricultural land, painted notices go no more than 500 ft apart.

Fenced land and practical tips

A substantial fence at least 3 ft high is covered by a separate part of the statute, and posting is not needed to trespass on structures or fenced land. For open land, check signs each season for fading, and keep dated photos of every sign and corner.

Questions about posting land in Florida

Does a Florida no trespassing sign need the owner's name?

Yes. Florida signs must carry the name of the owner, lessee or occupant, with No Trespassing in letters not less than 2 inches high. Check the current statute, 810.011, since details can change.

How far apart must Florida signs be?

Not more than 500 ft apart along and at each corner of the boundaries of the land. Agricultural painted notices are also limited to 500 ft apart. Count the full length of each side of your property.

Can I use purple paint in Florida?

No. Florida allows international orange paint, with the bottom of the mark 3 to 5 ft above ground. On agricultural land the painted marks must be no more than 500 ft apart. Purple paint is not part of the rule in the statute text we read.

This guide explains the law in plain words; it is not legal advice. We read the statute text on 2026-10-24. Laws change: check the current text here or ask your county or state wildlife agency.
