Iowa Posting Laws: How to Post Land Against Trespass
In Iowa, posting is only one way to make trespass happen. The Iowa Code treats entering land to hunt, fish or trap without the owner's express permission as trespass whether or not the land is posted, and notice can also be given in person. Signs still help, because they tell everyone your answer before they ask.
What the law asks for on signs
The posting rule sits in Iowa Code 716.7(2)(a)(2)(b). The statute text we read shows no owner-name requirement, no minimum letter height, no minimum sign size and no spacing figure, and no paint-mark system is described.
That leaves the sign details to you. The law sets no specific number for spacing, so place signs where people will see them. Read the current statute before relying on this summary.
Hunting, fishing and permission
Under 716.7(2)(a)(1), entering land without the owner's express permission to hunt, fish or trap counts as trespass whether the land is posted or not. A hunter cannot treat the lack of a sign as an invitation.
Trespass also occurs after personal notice, which can be oral or written. If someone is on your land and you tell them to leave, staying after that notice is a different matter from the sign question. Public utility rights-of-way are described as marked by posted signage or other means.
Practical tips
Put signs at the spots people actually use: the field gate, the end of a farm lane, the gap in a fence line. Look at the property from the road and from the neighbor's side, and ask whether a stranger would see a sign before stepping across.
Keep a few dated photos of each sign in place. Our signs are custom printed on aluminum or plastic with a live preview, and the builder follows these sign rules, but check the statute yourself.
Questions about posting land in Iowa
Do I have to post my land in Iowa to keep hunters off?
Not for hunting, fishing or trapping. Iowa Code 716.7(2)(a)(1) makes entering without the owner's express permission to do those things trespass whether or not the land is posted. Signs are still useful because they make your wishes plain to everyone.
Does Iowa say how big the letters on a sign must be?
The statute text we read shows no minimum letter height, no sign size and no spacing figure for Iowa. The posting provision is Iowa Code 716.7(2)(a)(2)(b). With no number in the law, use clear lettering and put signs where people will see them.
Can I just tell someone to leave my land in Iowa?
Yes. The statute text we read says trespass also occurs after personal notice, either oral or written. That means a direct request to leave counts even if no sign is up. Signs and personal notice work together, so use both where you can.
This guide explains the law in plain words; it is not legal advice. We read the statute text on 2026-10-24. Laws change: check the current text here or ask your county or state wildlife agency.
