Louisiana Posting Laws: How to Post Land

Louisiana lets landowners give notice against trespass with signs or with purple paint on trees and posts. The law says notice is not required by that section, but it describes how to give it if you want to. This guide covers the paint rules and offers plain tips for posting rural land.

What the law asks for on signs

The law is La. R.S. 14:63(J), with matching provisions in 14:63.3(A)(2) and 14:63.4(A)(2). It shows no owner-name requirement, no minimum letter height, no minimum sign size and no spacing figure for signs.

Notice is described as not required by this section but may be given by either signs or purple paint. Where there is no specific number for signs, place them where people will see them. Our text came from a 2018 act, and later amendments were not checked.

Purple paint marks

Purple paint goes on trees or posts as a vertical line not less than 8 in long and not less than 1 in wide, with the bottom 3 to 5 ft from the ground. The marks must be readily visible.

On forest land, marks go no more than 100 ft apart, with forest land defined under R.S. 3:3622. On other land they go no more than 1,000 ft apart, though closer marks are easier for a visitor to notice.

Practical tips

Think about the ways a stranger arrives: a boat landing, a levee road, a hunting trail. Put a sign or a purple mark at each one, and walk the line again after heavy storms, which knock down signs and wash off paint.

Our signs are custom printed on aluminum or plastic with a live preview, and the builder follows these sign rules. Wildlife and Fisheries posting rules under Title 56 were not checked, so look at those and the current statute as well.

Questions about posting land in Louisiana

Is purple paint accepted for posting land in Louisiana?

Yes. The statute text we read says notice may be given by signs or by purple paint marks on trees or posts. Each mark is a vertical line not less than 8 in long and not less than 1 in wide, readily visible, with the bottom 3 to 5 ft from the ground.

How far apart are purple marks in Louisiana?

No more than 100 ft apart on forest land, as defined in R.S. 3:3622, and no more than 1,000 ft apart on other land. The marks must be readily visible, so closer spacing helps in thick woods.

Is posting required in Louisiana?

The statute text we read says notice is not required by this section, but it may be given by either signs or purple paint. Posting still makes your wishes clear. Check the current statute, since later amendments to R.S. 14:63 were not checked.

This guide explains the law in plain words; it is not legal advice. We read the statute text on 2026-10-24. Laws change: check the current text here or ask your county or state wildlife agency.
