Michigan Posting Laws: How to Post Land
Michigan sets real numbers for posting signs: a minimum letter height and a minimum sign size, plus a rule that a person should be able to see a sign at any point of entry. Farm land follows different rules. Here is what the statute text we read says, in plain words.
What the law asks for on signs
MCL 324.73102(1)(b) says the minimum letter height on posting signs is 1 inch, and each posting sign must be not less than 50 square inches. The statute text we read shows no owner-name requirement.
Plan your sign layout around those two numbers before you order. A sign larger than the minimum, with letters bigger than the minimum, is easier for hunters and hikers to read from a distance, and it leaves less room for argument.
Spacing and placement
There is no distance figure. Signs must be spaced to enable a person to observe not less than 1 sign at any point of entry upon the property. Count your entry points first: gates, trails, field edges and road frontage.
A short walk around the boundary, looking in from outside the way a stranger would, will show you the gaps. Add a sign wherever one of your entry points has none that can be seen from that spot.
Farm land and permission
Under 73102(2), farm property and connected wooded areas require consent for recreational activity or trapping whether or not fenced or posted. Consent may be oral or written, and the owner can require written consent.
There are exceptions for retrieving a hunting dog on foot unless prohibited, and for wading or floating a navigable stream. Section 750.552(1)(c) also covers fenced or posted farm property. Read both sections before you rely on this summary.
Practical tips
Pick sturdy signs and mount them at eye level on solid posts. Our signs are custom printed on aluminum or plastic with a live preview, and the builder follows the statute's size and letter rules.
Keep dated photos of each sign in place, and check the statute for the latest text. Replace any sign that has faded, cracked or fallen, because a sign no one can read does not help you.
