New York Posting Laws: How to Post Land

New York's rule is ECL 11-2111. It is specific about the sign itself: the minimum size, how much of it the message must fill, and who is named on it. It is also specific about how far apart signs go and where they sit around the edge of your land.

What the law asks for on signs

Each sign must bear the name and address of the owner, lawful occupant or other authorized person or organization. The required wording is 'posted' or a warning against entry. The sign must measure not less than 11 inches by 11 inches, and the required statement must cover not less than 80 square inches.

Spacing and placement

Signs go not more than 660 feet apart, close to and along the boundaries. There must be at least one sign on each side of the area and on each side of each corner. That means a corner needs signs facing both directions. A parcel with a long road frontage can need a lot of signs, so measure first and count second.

Paint marks

The statute text we read lists no purple paint or other paint-mark rule. Under ECL 11-2111 the notice is a sign, so plan on signs rather than paint. If lawmakers change that, the statute page linked in the facts table is the place to look.

Practical tips

Sun fades printed signs over the seasons, and brush grows up in front of them. Check each one a couple of times a year, trim around it, and replace any that no longer read well from the boundary. Take a dated photo when you put a sign up. Those photos are a simple record of where and when you posted.
