Questions about open excavation signs

Where should an open excavation sign go?

Place a sign at each approach to the hole, such as the sidewalk side, the driveway and the lawn side, since people often cut across. Set the sign on the barrier so it faces the path people walk on.

Danger or caution for an open hole?

Danger (red) fits a deep or wide excavation where a fall or cave-in could cause death or serious injury. Caution (yellow) fits a shallow or narrow hole where the likely injury is minor or moderate, such as a twisted ankle. Ask your safety officer or the crew lead how deep and unstable the hole is before choosing.

Is aluminum or plastic better outdoors?

Aluminum is the sturdier choice at .040 in and has a gloss UV print, so it suits a fence or barrier left out in the weather. Plastic is lighter and flexible at .020 in, which works for a short-term sign on a light barrier.
