Patient Parking Only Signs

Medical offices and clinics often keep the spaces nearest the door for patients who arrive for appointments, and the rest of the drivers need to know where not to park. This sign marks those spaces so a visitor who is not seeing a doctor knows to park elsewhere.

Where patient parking only signs are used

A patient parking sign marks the spaces nearest the door of a dentist's office in a strip plaza, a physical therapy practice with a small lot, or the outpatient building of a hospital. Visitors who are not seeing a doctor often park in these spots without knowing they are reserved, and the sign sends them farther out. Staff at an urgent care center also use one on the first row near the check-in door.

Choosing the size and where to hang it

Put the sign at the head of each reserved space, at about eye height, so a driver reads it before pulling in. Use the 24 in x 18 in size for a row near the door and the 18 in x 12 in size for a single space at the end of the row. Aluminum is the choice for an outdoor lot because it resists sun and rain. Plastic works on a covered entry or a wall inside a covered lot. Set the sign where a parked car will not hide it.

Questions about patient parking only signs

How many signs does a patient lot need?

Put one sign on each reserved space, or one at the head of a row if the spaces sit close together. Mount it where a driver sees it before backing in. Check your local rules on how many signs a lot needs and the size they must be.

Can I add a towing warning?

The example line here is 'All others will be towed', but towing rules depend on your city and your property, so check your local rules before you use it. You can type any short line instead, such as 'Patients only' or your clinic's name.

Aluminum or plastic for a clinic lot?

Aluminum is rust-free, .040 inch thick and printed on one or two sides, with optional 1/4 inch corner holes for fastening. Plastic is .020 inch styrene with brass grommets, light and flexible. Pick aluminum for a lot post that faces weather and plastic for a light fence mount.

Does the sign need a second line for hours?

Only if the spaces are reserved at certain times. The extra line can list the hours, such as 8 AM to 5 PM, so drivers know when the rule applies. If the rule runs all day, leave the line blank. The printed PARKING ONLY words stay the same either way.

Will a visitor need to be told to park elsewhere?

Often the sign alone does the job, since most visitors read the words and move on. Some lots add a short note in the extra line, such as Visitors park in the rear lot, so the next step is clear. Keep the note short, and check that the rear lot is open and marked before you post it.
