Silica Warning Signs
A countertop or stone shop posts this sign at every entrance to a silica regulated area, where exposure to silica dust is above the permissible limit. The respirator line is part of the fixed legend, so every reader gets the same message at the door: wear respiratory protection in this area.

Where silica warning signs are used
The door to a slab polishing room, the entry to a grinding bay and the opening to a stone bench area are where a shop most needs this sign. Owners and safety officers hang it there because a delivery driver, a customer's installer or a new hire may step in before anyone explains the dust. The sign works as a stop: it tells anyone walking past that breathing protection is needed inside, even if they only came to drop off a slab.
Choosing the size and where to hang it
Put one on each entrance to a regulated area, at a height people read as they approach. A 36 x 24 inch landscape sign suits a wide opening or a wall beside a roll-up door, while the 12 x 18 inch portrait size fits a jamb or post. Rust-free aluminum handles damp areas, and plastic is light for a door that moves. Mount aluminum through its 1/4 inch holes, or hang plastic by the brass grommets in its corners or top two.
Questions about silica warning signs
Does a construction site need this sign?
The construction silica rule (29 CFR 1926.1153) has no sign requirement. It asks for a written exposure control plan that describes how access to work areas is restricted when needed. A sign on a construction job is not required by that rule, so decide with your safety officer whether one fits the work.
How many silica signs does a shop need?
Put one at every entrance to a regulated area, because the rule asks for signs at all entrances, not just the main door. A shop with a side door and a loading door into the same area needs one at each. Check the current standard for the exact posting rule.
Does the California version differ?
Yes. The Cal/OSHA general industry silica rule (8 CCR 5204(l)(3)) uses its own longer wording, with a Spanish block under the English. This sign prints the federal words, so check your state and local rules before you order for a California site.
Is the shipyard silica legend the same?
Yes. The shipyard silica rule (29 CFR 1915.1053) is identical to the general industry rule, so the legend and the all-entrances posting rule carry over. Shipyard and general industry wording match, so the choice of rule does not change the sign.
What does AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY tell visitors?
It tells visitors that the area is closed to anyone without authorization. It is the last line of the silica legend, printed as the rule gives it. Use the same wording on every entrance so a reader sees one consistent message at each door.
