Thin Ice Signs

Post this sign on the shoreline, at the trail head or on the fence along a pond, lake or retention basin, where people might step out onto the ice. Park districts, HOAs, golf courses and property managers use it near water that freezes unevenly.

Questions about thin ice signs

Where should thin ice signs go?

Mount them along the bank or shore at the points people walk down to the water, such as a path, a bench or a boat launch. Repeat the sign around the edge if the water is visible from several spots, so people see it no matter how they arrive.

Danger or warning for thin ice?

Danger (red) fits ice where a fall through could cause death, such as a stream inlet or a lake with unknown depth. Warning (orange) fits ice where the same fall could cause death or serious injury, but the risk is less certain. Ask a local expert about your water before choosing.

Can I add the name of the water body?

Yes. Type the pond, lake or basin name in the extra line, such as NORTH BASIN or RETENTION POND 2, so people know which water the sign covers. Check the spelling in the live preview before you order, since a wrong name can confuse visitors.
