Tornado Shelter Signs

Use this sign on the door or hallway wall that leads to a designated tornado shelter room, such as an interior lower-level room in a school, church, clubhouse or apartment building. It marks the spot people should head for when a tornado warning is in effect.

Where tornado shelter signs are used

A basement stairwell in a motel, a storm room in a community center, a mud room on a farmhouse, or an interior hallway marked as the shelter area all need a sign that leads people to one spot fast. A property manager may post one on the door of the shelter room, and a farm owner might hang one at the cellar hatch. It shows people where to go during a warning, so they do not stop to look for the spot.

Choosing the size and where to hang it

Hang it over the door of the shelter room or on the wall that leads to it, at about eye level, so people see it at once. The 24 by 18 in size fits a door, and 12 by 18 in suits a narrow hall wall. Aluminum is the right pick for a damp basement or a cellar, since it is rust-free. Plastic is light and suits a dry interior hall. Use holes or zip ties, and check your state and local rules for shelter requirements.

Questions about tornado shelter signs

Does a sign make a room a tornado shelter?

No. A sign only shows where people should go. Whether a room is suitable depends on its construction and location, and on the plan your building owner and local emergency manager set. Check with them and your building official before you name any room a tornado shelter.

Notice or Safety First?

SAFETY FIRST (green) fits a sign that marks a safety location, such as a shelter room, so it is the usual choice here. NOTICE (blue) fits an information sign, such as one that points people to the plan posted nearby. Choose the header that matches the sign's job, and confirm it with your emergency plan.

Where should it go, and what line?

Put one at the entry to the shelter area and one on the wall at the shelter door, at eye level. Add a room number or a name such as Lower Hall B in the custom line, and check the fit in the live preview. Keep the route to the shelter clear, and use aluminum for a fixed wall mount.

Will the sign show which room is safest?

The sign marks the room you already picked, but it does not check the room for safety. Choose a room with no outside walls or windows, and ask your local emergency office for advice if you can. Put the sign on that room's door and on the route to it, so people can follow it from the entry.

Can I put the route on the sign?

Yes. Type a short route on the extra line, such as Down the hall, left at the stairs. The preview shows how the line prints under the printed words. Keep the route short so people can follow it while moving quickly.
