New Hampshire Posting Laws: How to Post Land

New Hampshire's posting rule is RSA 635:4. It asks for durable signs with the owner's name and address, large block letters, and placement on all sides of the land. There is no purple paint rule. Here is the plain version.

What the law asks for on signs

Each sign must bear the name and address of the owner or lessee. Letters are block letters no less than 2 inches in height, and signs are made of durable material. The words describe the prohibited activity, for example 'No Hunting or Trespassing'. Our custom printed aluminum and plastic signs can carry that wording with a live preview.

Spacing and placement

Signs are posted on all sides of the land, not more than 100 yards apart. They also go at gates, bars and commonly used entrances. A woodlot with a worn footpath is a good example: that path counts as a commonly used entrance even if no gate stands there. Mark your corners too, because that is where fence lines and stone walls change direction.

Paint marks

RSA 635 has no purple paint provision. Purple paint bills in 2022 (HB 1108) and 2024 (HB 1527) were not enacted, according to an earlier file that we have not re-checked. For now, plan on signs rather than paint, and watch for later changes.

What we could not confirm

We read RSA 635:4 through a summary of the official page. Sign size and the exact wording, beyond words describing the prohibited activity, were not checked line by line. Please read the statute on the state website before you order a batch, and keep a dated photo of each sign once it is up.

Questions about posting land in New Hampshire

How tall must the letters be on a New Hampshire no trespassing sign?

RSA 635:4 asks for block letters no less than 2 inches in height, on signs of durable material. The sign also needs the name and address of the owner or lessee. Check the current statute for any other details.

How far apart do New Hampshire posting signs go?

Signs are posted on all sides of the land, not more than 100 yards apart. Add signs at gates, bars and commonly used entrances. The law is written around those placement points, so walk your boundary and count them first.

Can I use purple paint to post land in New Hampshire?

Not under RSA 635. The statute text we read shows no purple paint provision, and purple paint bills from 2022 and 2024 were not enacted per an earlier file we have not re-checked. Use signs with the owner's name and address.

This guide explains the law in plain words; it is not legal advice. We read the statute text on 2026-10-24. Laws change: check the current text here or ask your county or state wildlife agency.
