Oregon Posting Laws: How to Post Land
Oregon's closure sign is described in ORS 105.700. It sets the wording, a minimum letter size, a minimum sign size and an owner contact block. Gated land and land along a road are handled separately, and orange paint is the alternative to signs.
What the law asks for on signs
The sign must contain 'Closed to Entry' or words to that effect in letters no less than 1 inch in height. It must be no smaller than 8 inches high by 11 inches wide. It must display the name, business address and phone number (if any) of the landowner or agent.
Spacing and placement
On unfenced land with no public right-of-way, a sign goes at each outer gate and normal point of access. Along an unfenced public road, a sign goes no closer than 30 ft of the road centerline. The alternative is signs or paint at regular intervals of not less than one-fourth mile along the road.
Orange paint, not purple
Oregon has no purple paint rule. A paint blaze is at least 50 square inches of fluorescent orange paint. On metal fence posts, that means approximately the top six inches. The blaze may not go on posts where a public road enters the land.
Hunting and vehicles
ORS 498.120 bars hunting on cultivated or enclosed land of another without permission. Enclosed can be shown by wire, ditch, hedge, fence, water or other visible distinctive lines, and posting is not required.
Closing land to motor-propelled vehicles is a separate matter under ORS 164.270: signs at least 8 x 11 in, 'Closed to Motor-propelled Vehicles' in letters 1 in or larger, owner name, address and phone, at normal entry points no more than 350 yards apart.
