Helpful guides
Where accessible parking signs are used
A medical clinic places one on the first stall nearest its entrance, so a patient with a placard can park close to the door. A shopping center puts one at each accessible stall along the storefronts, and a condo association uses one on a post in a resident lot. The sign marks the space for a driver with a valid placard, so others know the stall is not a regular spot.
Choosing the size and where to hang it
The 18 by 24 inch size belongs on a post at the head of each stall, where a driver reads it from the driver's seat. The 12 by 18 inch size fits where the post space is tight. Aluminum takes bolts through its corner holes and keeps its shape outdoors. Plastic weighs little and works for a temporary layout, tied on through its grommets. A lot used after dark is a good reason to choose reflective aluminum. Check your state and local rules on accessible parking signs, including any required wording, before you order.
Questions about accessible parking signs
What does the ADA ask for on accessible parking signs?
The 2010 ADA Standards (502.6) call for the International Symbol of Accessibility on accessible spaces, "van accessible" on van spaces, and the sign mounted so its bottom is at least 60 in above the ground. Many states add a fine or towing notice; check your state's wording.
Reflective or plain aluminum?
Lots that are used at night are easier to read with reflective aluminum. Some cities require reflective parking signs; check before you order.
Should I add a van accessible line?
Add the van accessible line only if the stall is wide enough for a van with a lift. Keep the line short so RESERVED and PARKING stay large.
What goes in the permit line?
The permit line is a place for the wording your state or city asks you to show, along with a short note on who may park. Look up that wording with your state or city before you type it.
