Helpful guides

Where tow-away zone signs are used

A shopping center manager posts one at each entrance to a lot that has a fire lane and only a few spaces. An apartment complex places one on a post by the reserved row, where unauthorized cars often park overnight. A church lot posts one at its far gate to keep cars off the spaces used during services. Each sign sits at the point where a driver decides whether to pull in, which is the moment it does its job.

Choosing the size and where to hang it

The 24 by 36 inch size fits a post at each lot entrance, where a driver sees it before parking, and the 18 by 24 inch size suits a post at a reserved row. Aluminum with corner holes is usually fixed with bolts or screws and stays put. Plastic weighs little and works for a short-term lot setup with zip ties. A lot drivers reach after dark benefits from reflective aluminum. Check your state and local rules on towing signs and wording before you order.

Questions about tow-away zone signs

What has to be on a tow-away sign?

Each state (and often the city) sets it: commonly the towing company's name and phone, where the car is taken, the hours, sign size and letter height, and signs at every entrance. Check your state's towing law before relying on the sign.

What size tow-away sign do I need?

Some states set a minimum. California asks for at least 17 x 22 inches with letters at least 1 inch tall, and Texas for at least 18 x 24 inches, so choose 18 x 24 or 24 x 36 there. Other states set no size. Our tow-away sign requirements guide lists the rules for several states.

Can I leave off the towing company line?

Yes. Both customer lines are optional, so you can switch off the towing company or the phone line and keep the rest. Many owners fill both lines so a driver knows whom to call. The live preview shows exactly what prints before you order.

Should the sign go on a post or a fence?

A post set in the ground at each entry gives a driver a clear view before turning in. A fence works if it sits at the lot line and faces oncoming traffic. Aluminum suits either spot, while plastic is light enough for a temporary lot. Set the sign at a height where a parked car will not block it.
