Drive Thru Signs
Fast food counters, coffee stands and pharmacies use a drive thru sign to point cars into the right lane. Post it at the lane entrance, beside the menu board, or at the pickup window so the lane is easy to find from the road.

Where drive thru signs are used
A drive thru sign marks the lane at a bagel shop with a single pickup window, a dry cleaner's drop off drive, or a bank's teller lane where drivers wait with the engine running. Cars that enter from the wrong side of the building can spill into the parking lot, so the sign helps the first car in line find the right path. It also tells drivers on a busy road that the lane is for the window and not for parking.
Choosing the size and where to hang it
The lane entrance is the place for a post at about eye height, where a driver sees the sign before turning in. The 24 in x 18 in size reads from the road, and the 12 in x 18 in size suits a short lane with a narrow entrance. Aluminum handles sun, rain and road grit on an outdoor post. Plastic works on a covered canopy wall. A second sign by the pickup window helps drivers who have already turned in.
Questions about drive thru signs
Can I add opening hours to a drive thru sign?
Yes. Type a short line such as Open late and the live preview shows it under DRIVE THRU as you type. Keep the line short so a driver can read it from a moving car. You can also leave the sign plain with no extra line.
Which size should I pick for a drive thru lane?
Pick 24 x 18 in landscape when drivers read the sign from a distance, such as at a lane entrance. Pick 12 x 18 in portrait for a narrow post or a spot beside the window. Other sizes are 18 x 12 in and 12 x 12 in.
Should I choose aluminum or plastic for a drive thru?
Aluminum is .040 in thick and rust-free, with print on one or two sides. Plastic is lighter and flexible, with brass grommets, but it prints on one side only. Choose aluminum when the sign stays outside in every kind of weather.
Can the sign say the lane is closed?
The printed DRIVE THRU words state the lane's use. A closed lane is better shown with a separate sign at the lane entrance, so the drive thru sign stays accurate. If the lane closes at night, use the extra line for a short note such as Closed after 9 PM, and check it each season.
Should I pick a bright color for a busy road?
A sign that stands out from the lot is easier to read at speed. Yellow with black, or white with red, reads clearly from a moving car, while a dull color can blend into a busy street. Choose the color that matches the rest of your signs, then check the sign from the road at the speed a driver would travel.
