Where formaldehyde warning signs are used
A funeral home posts this sign at the prep room door, where formaldehyde solutions are handled, and a lab puts one on the corridor door to a room where solutions are poured or stored. A histology bench room with two entries needs a sign at each one, and a service corridor behind the lab may need one as well. A funeral director or lab manager orders them so that new staff, cleaners and repair technicians see the warning before they walk in.
Choosing the size and where to hang it
Each entrance and access way needs its own sign, at a height people read as they reach the door. The 12 x 18 inch portrait size fits a funeral home door or jamb, and the 36 x 24 inch landscape size suits a lab wall beside a double door. Rust-free aluminum suits a permanent wall, while plastic is light enough to move when a room is reassigned. Aluminum takes 1/4 inch holes in the corners; plastic has brass grommets in the corners or top two.
Questions about formaldehyde warning signs
Why doesn't the formaldehyde sign mention respirators?
The OSHA formaldehyde legend prints no respirator line, so the sign follows that wording exactly. Ask your safety officer what protection the room needs, because the sign does not cover it.
What does all entrances and access ways mean for a lab?
It means every route into the regulated area, not only the main door. A lab with three doors into the same room would need a sign at each one. Check the current standard to confirm which openings count as access ways in your building.
Should a funeral home choose aluminum or plastic?
Aluminum is .040 inch and rust-free, with a gloss print on one or two sides. Plastic is a light .020 inch sheet printed on one side, with brass grommets. Pick aluminum for a sign that stays on one wall, and plastic when weight matters most.
Does a construction crew need the same formaldehyde sign?
Yes. The construction formaldehyde rule (29 CFR 1926.1148) is identical to the general industry rule, so the five lines do not change on a job site, and the posting rule matches as well.
Is reflective aluminum useful for a formaldehyde area?
The rule does not ask for reflective material. Reflective aluminum is .040 aluminum with engineer-grade vinyl, and it shows in headlights at night, so it only helps on a route that vehicles use after dark, such as a service drive.
