Lockout Tagout Signs

Post this sign on a machine, electrical disconnect or control panel where workers must lock and tag energy sources before service. It is a reminder at the point of work, not the procedure itself, so each crew should follow the written steps in the employer's program.

Where lockout tagout signs are used

A conveyor motor starter in a bottling line, a compressor on a rooftop unit, a hydraulic press in a stamping shop, or a bakery mixer with its own main switch are all places where energy must be locked off before someone reaches inside. A maintenance lead may hang one on the panel door at the foot of the machine, and a plant safety person might put a second one at the main breaker room door. It is the reminder people see before they open a guard.

Choosing the size and where to hang it

Fix it to the machine frame or panel door at about eye level, where a worker stands at the controls. The 24 by 18 in size suits a machine housing, and 36 by 24 in fits a larger panel seen from across a room. Aluminum is the right pick in a shop with oil or washdown, since it is rust-free. Plastic is light and suits a dry electrical room. Use the corner holes or zip ties, and keep the sign clear of moving parts.

Questions about lockout tagout signs

Danger or warning?

DANGER (red) is for a hazard that will cause death or serious injury, such as an unlocked disconnect on a live machine. WARNING (orange) covers a hazard that could lead to death or serious injury. The employer's lockout program decides the level and the steps, so check them with your safety officer.

Does this sign replace our lockout program?

No. A sign only reminds workers at the point of service. The employer's lockout or permit program sets the steps, the locks, the tags and who may do the work. Check with your safety officer before relying on a sign for any part of that control.

Where and what size?

Put it on the machine, the panel door or the disconnect, at a height and place a worker sees before touching the controls. The 24 x 18 in landscape size is easy to read from a few feet away. Aluminum takes holes for screws or bolts, and plastic is light for a temporary mount.

Who should see the sign?

Everyone who services, cleans or works near the machine should read it, so place it where they stand. A written procedure, lock and tag stock, and training are still needed to do the job. The sign is a reminder at the point of work, so check your state and local rules for what a program must include.

Can I add the machine number?

Yes. Type the machine or line number on the extra line, such as Line 3 press. The preview shows the result under the printed words. A clear name helps a crew match the sign to the right equipment, so write it the way your team says it.
