Wrong Way Signs
Wrong way signs go at the end of one-way lanes, parking exits and drive-thru lanes where cars might enter the wrong way. Restaurants, shopping centers, hospitals and apartment lots use them to keep traffic moving, and the extra line can give a short instruction such as Do not enter.

Where wrong way signs are used
A wrong way sign goes at the mouth of a motel's one-way drive, the end of a self-storage facility's loop, or a loading lane where delivery vans must travel one direction only. A driver who turns in from the wrong side sees the sign before reaching a car coming the other way. Facility managers post it where the lane meets the street, so the mistake is caught early.
Choosing the size and where to hang it
At the lane mouth, a post at about eye height faces a driver who is about to enter from the wrong side. The 24 in x 18 in size reads from the road, and the 12 in x 12 in size suits a short lane with a curb. Aluminum is the right pick for an outdoor post, since it handles weather. Plastic works on a covered wall inside a lot. Use a second sign on the opposite side of the lane for drivers who enter from the street.
Questions about wrong way signs
Where should a wrong way sign go?
Face it toward drivers at the lane entrance, before the turn where they might go the wrong way. A 24 x 18 in landscape sign reads from a car. Reflective aluminum comes in 18 x 12 in, 24 x 18 in and 12 x 18 in if the lane is used after dark.
Can I use it on a public road?
Usually not. Traffic signs on public roads are set by the city or state, and some do not allow private signs in the public right of way. Use this sign on your own lot, and check local rules before you post near a road.
Red on white or white on red?
Red on white is the classic look for a do not enter message and is easy to pick out at speed. White on red uses the same two colours switched, so choose the one that matches your other lot signs.
What should the extra line say?
A short instruction does the job, such as Do not enter or One way only. Keep it to a few words, since the driver is reading while moving. The printed WRONG WAY words state the problem, and the line gives the fix, so both parts appear at a glance.
Does the sign need a second version for the other side?
Often yes. A driver going the wrong way may be on the far side of the lane, so one sign on one side can be missed. Put a matching sign on the opposite post if drivers enter from both ends. Check that the signs face the driver who needs them, and not the traffic already going the right way.
