Questions about confined space signs
Why is this one only danger?
CONFINED SPACE is offered in DANGER (red) only because an unplanned entry can cause death or serious injury, such as from bad air or engulfment. Put a sign on every access point. The employer's permit program sets the rules for entry, so ask your safety officer how they apply.
Can this sign replace our entry permit program?
No. A sign only tells people to keep out. The employer's confined space or permit program sets how entry is planned, tested, watched and rescued. Your safety officer should set those steps, and the sign should never be the only control on who gets in.
Where should it go and which material?
Mount it on the lid, hatch or fence at each access point, so it is seen before the lid opens. Aluminum (.040 in) is rigid and takes screw or bolt holes at the top corners. Plastic is light, flexible .020 in styrene, which suits a temporary barrier with brass grommets.
