Fire Riser Room Signs
Sprinkler contractors and facility managers hang this sign on the access door to a riser room or a fire pump room. The fire code sets a minimum letter height of 2 in. and a minimum stroke of 3/8 in. for these doors, so the builder only offers sizes where every line reaches 2 in.

Where fire riser room signs are used
Riser rooms turn up in more places than most people expect, so this sign goes on more than one kind of door. A property manager fixes one to the closet at the back of a second-floor office corridor, where the riser hides behind a wall panel. A school maintenance crew hangs a pump room sign beside the boiler wing, and a warehouse owner puts a larger sign on the steel door of a riser room at the loading dock. Each door gets its own sign that names the room behind it.
Choosing the size and where to hang it
Put the sign where someone walking toward the door reads it first, usually centered on the door face so it shows from the hallway. Pick 24 x 18 in for most doors and 36 x 24 in for a long corridor where people read it from a distance. Aluminum or reflective aluminum suits an exterior door, and plastic is light enough for an interior one. Corner holes take screws into the door or frame, and plastic has brass grommets for a cable tie.
Questions about fire riser room signs
Which wording should I choose?
Pick the words that match what is behind the door. FIRE SPRINKLER RISER ROOM is a common choice, FIRE PUMP ROOM goes on a pump room, and a combined line such as FIRE ALARM CONTROL PANEL SPRINKLER RISER ROOM suits a shared room. The code sets no wording, and your fire marshal approves the final sign.
Should the sign be white on red or red on white?
The code only asks for lettering that contrasts with the background, so either pairing can work on its own. Many local sheets call for white letters on red, while some want red on white, so check your fire marshal's sheet before you choose.
What size should I pick for a combined sign?
A four-line combined sign comes only in 24 x 36 in or 36 x 24 in. 18 x 12 in is the smallest size offered and suits the two- and three-line door signs. The builder measures the letters at the size you pick, so check the preview before you order.
Do I need one sign inside the room and one outside?
Some fire marshals ask for a larger sign on the outside of the access door and a smaller one inside, so people already in the room know what it is. Ask yours before you order. Each side is its own sign, so order one of each size you need.
Do I need the fire marshal's sheet before I order?
Many cities publish a sheet with the sizes, colors and metal thickness they accept, and it can differ from the code. Check it against this sign first, since some local sheets ask for thicker aluminum than our standard .040 in. Choose the size and color that match the sheet.
