Uneven Surface Signs

Use this sign where a walkway, patio, dock or parking area has a lip, a heave or a patched section that a person might miss. It fits a doorway threshold or a stretch of old concrete that is waiting for repair.

Where uneven surface signs are used

A step down at a back-yard bar, a cracked slab on a cemetery path, a lifted sidewalk square outside a bakery's side door, or a patched dip at a drive-through lane all catch people who are looking at a phone or carrying a load. A business owner may put one on the wall beside the step, and a homeowner might mount one on a fence post by a raised flagstone walk. It gives a quick warning where a repair is scheduled but not done yet.

Choosing the size and where to hang it

Place it on a post or wall at the point where a person steps onto the bad spot, not too far back, so it is read in time. The 12 by 18 in size fits a short walk or a threshold, and 18 by 12 in suits a stretch of broken concrete. Outdoors, choose aluminum, which is rust-free and gloss printed for daily sun. Plastic is light and works on an indoor stair landing. Use the corner holes, zip ties or tape on a clean, dry surface.

Questions about uneven surface signs

Where should I put an uneven surface sign?

Put it right at the uneven spot, or just before it on the approach, so people can see it while they still have time to adjust their step. For a long stretch of broken pavement, one sign at each end is easier to spot than one in the middle.

Why is caution the only header here?

This sign uses CAUTION (yellow) because a trip usually causes minor or moderate injury. If the uneven spot is a drop, a stair edge or a deep hole, a sign with a stronger header may suit it better. Your safety officer can help you set the right level for your site.

Can I add a line?

Yes. Type a short line such as a building name or Watch Your Step, and the live preview shows the full sign as you type. Choose aluminum for a fixed mount on a wall or post, or plastic for a sign you set up on a temporary basis.

Will a sign get the crack repaired?

No. A sign does not fix the surface, it only warns people until the repair is done. Keep it up until the area is level or patched, then take it down. If the surface keeps lifting, the sign still helps while you plan the bigger job with a contractor.

Does one sign cover a long stretch of walk?

One sign works for a short stretch. A long walk with several bad spots may need one at each end or one near each spot. Stand where a walker would come from and check that the sign shows before the trouble starts. Plastic and aluminum both work, so pick the size from the preview.
