Watch for Ice Signs

Post this sign at the doors, ramps and walks of a building that sees winter freeze and thaw, such as an office, clinic, school or apartment building. It is most useful where people step from a heated lobby onto a walk that may still be icy.

Questions about watch for ice signs

Where should a watch for ice sign go?

Place it at the top of each walk or ramp people use, where they first step outside. On a long walk, add a second sign partway along, especially where the path stays in shade. If a town or county sets sign placement for your property, follow its rules.

Is caution the only header offered?

Yes. Watch for ice comes in CAUTION (yellow) only, because a slip on ice is usually a minor or moderate injury. For a steep ramp or stair where a fall could be more serious, a different sign with a stronger header may suit it better, so ask your safety officer.

Which material for an outdoor walk?

Aluminum (.040 in) is rigid, rust-free and printed with a gloss UV finish, so it suits a fixed post or wall. Plastic, a .020 in styrene, bends and weighs little, and its brass grommets suit a sign that comes down each winter. Choose aluminum for a spot that stays in one place.
