Watch Your Step Signs

Watch your step signs go at stair landings, ramp edges and the spots where a floor drops or rises by a few inches. Building owners, retail managers and facility teams in older buildings use them to remind people to look down at a change in level.

Where watch your step signs are used

Church sanctuaries with raised chancels, museum galleries and nursing homes post this sign at a level change, such as a step down into a fellowship hall or a sunken lobby. A bowling alley may hang one at the edge of a raised lane, and a tile shop can use one where a new floor meets an old one. The short message catches the eye of someone who is looking at a phone.

Choosing the size and where to hang it

At about eye level, mount it on the wall near the step, angled so people see it as they approach the drop. The 24 in x 18 in size suits a wall beside a step, and the 36 in x 24 in size reads from across a large lobby. Plastic is light and works on a dry interior wall with tape or grommets and zip ties. Aluminum is the better pick for an entry that gets wet, since it is rust-free.

Questions about watch your step signs

Where should a watch your step sign go?

Put it at the top or bottom of a stair, or at the edge of a ramp or raised dock, at eye level for someone walking toward it. Placing it before the change gives people time to react. Ask your building inspector or safety officer about any rules for your steps.

Why is this sign only available in yellow?

The builder offers only the Caution header for this sign. Caution, the yellow header, covers a hazard that could cause minor or moderate injury. Ask your safety officer if a particular step needs a stronger header.

Can I add a stair or floor number?

Type a short extra line, such as a stair letter, floor name or the word RAMP, into the optional line in the builder. The finished sign appears in the preview, so check the text before the order goes in.

Does the sign work for a single step?

Yes. A short step or a raised threshold can take the sign, and the 18 in x 12 in size is a good fit for a doorway. For a longer change in level, the 24 in x 18 in or 36 in x 24 in size reads better from a distance. The optional extra line can name the spot, such as 'Back porch step'.

Does the sign replace a handrail or a ramp?

No. The sign reminds people to look down, and it does not fix the drop or add a rail. A worn step or a low ramp edge is a repair job, and it is worth checking your state and local rules for the stair and ramp standards that apply to your building.
