FDC Signs

Sprinkler contractors and general contractors order this sign when the fire department connection sits behind a fence, planter or parking structure. It shows crews where the connection is, and it is a location sign, not the raised metal plate that goes on the connection itself.

    Where FDC signs are used

A fire department connection can end up behind something a truck cannot reach. A gated apartment complex puts a sign on the gate post beside the connection. A strip mall owner mounts one on the side wall of a building whose connection hides behind a dumpster enclosure. An industrial park with several buildings puts a sign on the street side of each one, so crews know which connection serves which building. Some fire departments also ask for the same sign on new buildings, so a builder closing out a job may order one for a connection that faces a back lot.

Choosing the size and where to hang it

Match the size to the distance. A 12 x 12 in sign suits a short wall beside a connection, and a 24 x 36 in sign reads from a road set back from the curb. Aluminum suits an outdoor wall or post, and reflective aluminum shows in headlights when a crew drives in at night. Plastic is light, so it suits a sheltered spot under an overhang. Fasten it with screws or wire through the holes, so it stays put in the weather.

    Questions about FDC signs

Do I need an arrow on the sign?

Add an arrow when the connection cannot be seen from the street. On an existing building, the code asks for FDC letters at least 6 in tall, plus words at least 2 in tall or an arrow that shows the location. Your fire marshal approves the final sign, including the arrow.

    Where should the sign hang?

Put it on the street front or side of the building, close enough that the arrow points at the right spot. If the connection stands away from the wall, some fire marshals want a post sign beside it. Aluminum signs can have 1/4 in. holes for screws, and plastic has brass grommets for ties.

Does this sign replace the metal FDC plate?

No. This is a location sign and does not replace the metal sign with raised letters (AUTOMATIC SPRINKLERS, STANDPIPES or TEST CONNECTION) that the fire code puts on the connection itself under IFC 912.5. That raised plate comes with the fitting, so check that your sprinkler contractor supplies it.

Can I add a building or suite number?

Yes. The address, building or suite line is an optional line you type, and the live preview shows it on the sign before you order. If one connection serves several buildings, name each one, since crews need to know which building the connection feeds.

Can the sign say DO NOT BLOCK?

Yes. Pick the FDC / DO NOT BLOCK wording so the sign also tells drivers to keep the connection clear. Fire marshals word this in different ways, and some ask for BY ORDER OF FIRE MARSHAL, so check the exact words on their sheet before you order.
