Sprinkler Control Valve Signs

Sprinkler contractors and facility managers fix this sign to the riser wall, a valve cage or a post by a post indicator valve. A crew reading the tag can tell which valve controls which zone, floor or part of the building before they turn any handle.

Where sprinkler control valve signs are used

Valve signs earn their keep in buildings with several zones. A shopping center's maintenance team fixes a tag to the valve cage behind the anchor store, naming the wing it feeds. A cold storage operator labels the control valve outside a freezer room, where the riser is hard to find. An outdoor post indicator valve at a church gets a sign on the post beside the fire lane, so a crew can find it from the parking lot. A plant engineer tags each floor's valve in a stacked office tower so no one has to guess.

Choosing the size and where to hang it

Mount the sign on the riser wall or valve cage right beside the valve it names, so the tag and handle are read together. A post indicator valve sign goes on a post or wall next to that valve. Use 12 x 12 in for a single valve and 18 x 12 in when the zone line needs more room. Aluminum suits a valve outdoors or near water, and its holes take wire or chain. Plastic is light and suits an indoor valve.

Questions about sprinkler control valve signs

Can I put a zone or floor on the sign?

Yes. The optional line lets you type the zone, the floor or the area the valve controls, such as FLOORS 1-4. Match the words to the sprinkler plans, because the plans name each valve, and check the live preview so the line fits the size you pick.

Aluminum or plastic for a valve?

Aluminum is the better choice for a valve. Sprinkler standards ask for a permanently marked, weatherproof sign, and some local rules ask for metal only. Our plastic is a light, flexible .020 in sheet, so it suits an indoor valve better than one out in the weather.

How do I fasten the sign?

Aluminum signs can have 1/4 in. holes, and the sprinkler standards name corrosion-resistant wire or chain for securing valve signs. Ask your sprinkler contractor to fit the chain. Your fire marshal approves the final sign and decides whether a printed tag counts as permanently marked.

Does each valve need its own sign?

Sprinkler standards ask for an identification sign on each control valve, so a building with several zones often needs several tags. Order five or more and save 10%, or ten or more and save 15%, which helps a building with many valves.

What does a post indicator valve sign need?

A post indicator valve sign names the valve and the zone or building it serves. Put it on the post or wall beside the valve, and type the zone in the optional line, copying the label your sprinkler contractor uses.
