Where not an entrance signs are used
A kitchen door at a restaurant that delivery drivers push open, a hotel corridor's far door that a guest mistakes for the lobby route, an apartment courtyard door that looks like a main entrance, or a garden gate beside a church hall all look like the way in. A manager may place one on the door of a bakery's receiving room, and a property owner might mount one on the courtyard door. It sends a person to the right door before they pull the wrong handle.
Choosing the size and where to hang it
Center it on the door face at about eye level, where a person reads it before pulling the handle. The 18 by 12 in size fits a narrow service or delivery door, and 24 by 18 in suits a larger metal door. Choose aluminum for an outdoor door that gets rain and cleaning, since it is rust-free. Plastic is light and suits an interior door that opens into a hallway. Use the holes or zip ties on the grommets, and keep the sign clear of the door's swing.
Questions about not an entrance signs
Notice or caution?
NOTICE (blue) is the usual choice for a door that is simply not the public entrance, with no hazard behind it. CAUTION (yellow) fits a service door that opens onto a work area, dock or machine room where a visitor who walked in could be hurt. Pick the header that matches what is behind the door.
Can I use it on an exit door?
Be careful. A door that must stay usable as an exit has its own rules for signs, locks and hardware, and a sign saying not an entrance could confuse someone who needs to get out. Ask your fire marshal or building official what they want on that door before you post anything.
Where should it go, and what size?
Mount it on the door at eye level, on the side people see as they walk up, so they read it before they pull the handle. The 12 x 18 in portrait size suits a narrow door. Aluminum takes corner holes for screws, while plastic has brass grommets for zip ties.
Will the sign stop someone from opening the door?
A sign informs, but it does not lock the door. If a door must stay shut, add a lock or an alarm bar as your building requires. Use the sign to point visitors and drivers toward the front entrance, so they go there first.
Can I add a direction on the sign?
Yes. The extra line can read Main entrance on the left or Front door, and the live preview shows it before you order. Keep the direction short, since a driver or delivery worker reads it in a few seconds.
