Where authorized personnel only signs are used
A stockroom behind a bakery counter, a chemical closet in a school custodial area, a roof access door, or a cash office behind a grocery counter all have a door a visitor might open by mistake. A manager may put one on a walk-in cooler door, and a property owner might mount one on the roof access door. It sends the message before a hand reaches for the handle, and it tells new hires where the staff-only line runs.
Choosing the size and where to hang it
Centered on the door at about eye level, the sign shows its words before a visitor reaches the handle. The 24 by 18 in size fits a standard door, and 12 by 18 in suits a side door. Aluminum is the right choice for an outside door or a damp cooler corridor, since it is rust-free. Plastic is light and suits a dry office door. Mount with the corner holes or zip ties, and check the door hardware separately, since a sign does not lock anything.
Questions about authorized personnel only signs
Which header should I pick?
NOTICE (blue) fits a room with no specific hazard, where the rule is only who may enter. DANGER (red) fits a room where someone who walks in could be killed or seriously hurt, such as one with exposed high voltage. CAUTION (yellow) fits a room where the likely harm is minor. Your safety officer picks the level for each room.
Does this sign keep people out?
No. A sign only tells people who may enter. A locked door, a badge reader or a staffed desk is what keeps people out, so pair the sign with a lock wherever access matters for safety. Ask your safety officer or building owner before you rely on a sign for security.
Where should I mount it, and which size?
Mount it on the door at eye level, on the latch side, so people read it before the handle. The 12 x 18 in portrait size suits a door panel or the wall beside the door. Aluminum takes 1/4 in holes at the corners for screws, and plastic, a light .020 in styrene, has brass grommets for zip ties.
Can the sign go on a door that also has a lock?
Yes. The sign goes on the door face and does not interfere with the lock. A sign states the rule, and a lock does the locking. Use both on rooms that hold valuable stock or equipment, and keep keys or codes with the people who need them.
Which header suits a door a visitor might try?
The notice header is calm and suits a back office that visitors are simply not expected to enter. The danger header draws more attention for a door with equipment or chemicals behind it. The printed lines stay the same either way, so choose by how much attention the door needs.
