Home / Guides / Mesh vs Vinyl Banners: Which to Choose for Your Spot

Mesh vs Vinyl Banners

Our banners come in two materials. Solid 13 oz vinyl is a solid sheet. Vinyl mesh has small open holes, so the wind passes through it instead of catching on it. Both are printed on one side, with hemmed edges and brass grommets, and both cost the same at the same size. This guide shows what each one is, how it handles wind, where each fits, how each hangs and where the long fence sizes are. The idea pictures look the same for both materials, so each note names the material.

What each one is

Solid 13 oz vinyl is a solid sheet, printed on one side. Vinyl mesh is printed the same way, but it has small open holes all over it. Both have hemmed edges and brass grommets around the edges, so both take the same ties, rope and hooks.

Choose the material for the spot, not for the words. Our banner pages offer both materials, so the design and the wording stay the same and only the material changes.

How each one handles wind

Mesh lets the wind through, so less of it catches on the banner. That makes mesh the better pick for an open fence or a yard where the wind blows hard. Solid vinyl catches more of the wind, so it needs more ties and a close look after a gusty day.

Neither material should be left up in a storm. If bad weather is coming, take the banner down before it arrives, whichever material you chose.

Where each one fits

Mesh is the choice for chain link fences and outdoor rails, where a solid sheet would catch the wind. The long fence lengths are on our Mesh Fence Banners page, made for mesh. Solid vinyl suits a spot with a wall, a porch, a garage door or a room indoors. These are suggestions, so pick the material that matches the place and the wind you expect.

  • Mesh: chain link fences, outdoor rails, open lots and any spot where the wind is strong.
  • Solid vinyl: walls, porches, garage doors, and indoor walls with removable hooks.
  • Either one: a tent front, a fence or a wall, as long as it hangs by its grommets.

How each one hangs

Both hang the same way, by the grommets, so you use the same ties, rope or hooks for either material. On a chain link fence, zip ties go through the grommets and around the fence wire, starting at the corners. On a brick wall, brick clips grip the edge of the brick. Indoors, removable adhesive hooks can hold a solid banner if they are rated for its weight. The full steps for each spot are in how to hang a banner.

Weight is the one hanging detail that depends on the banner's size. A solid 13 oz vinyl banner weighs about 13 ounces per square yard, so a 6 by 3 foot banner is about 1.6 pounds and an 8 by 4 foot banner is about 2.9 pounds. These weights are for solid vinyl. Check every hook or tie against the weight before you buy it.

Sizes and prices

The price is the same for mesh and vinyl at every size. A 6 by 3 foot text banner costs $57.95 in either material, and an 8 by 4 foot text banner costs $101.95 in either material. The table above puts the two side by side.

The long fence lengths, 8, 10, 20 and 25 feet long and 6 feet tall, cost $152.95, $190.95, $380.95 and $475.95 in either material. They are listed on the Mesh Fence Banners page, and on a fence that long, mesh is the usual pick.

Which one to choose

Start with the spot. An open fence or a windy yard points to mesh. A wall, a porch, a garage door or a room points to solid vinyl. If the spot is a long fence run, mesh is the usual pick, because a long solid sheet catches a lot of wind.

If the spot does not decide it, either material works at the same price, and you can keep the same design and words for both.

  • Open fence, outdoor rail or windy lot: mesh.
  • Wall, porch, garage door or indoors: solid vinyl.
  • Long fence run of 8 to 25 feet: mesh.
  • Any other spot: either one, at the same price.

Common questions

Which is better in wind, mesh or vinyl?

Mesh is the better pick for wind. It has small open holes, so the wind passes through instead of catching on the sheet. Solid 13 oz vinyl catches more of the wind, so it needs more ties and a close look after a gusty day. If a storm is coming, take the banner down before it arrives, whichever material you chose.

Do mesh and vinyl cost the same?

Yes, at the same size. A 6 by 3 foot text banner is $57.95 in either material, and an 8 by 4 foot text banner is $101.95 in either material. The long fence lengths of 8, 10, 20 and 25 feet, all 6 feet tall, cost $152.95, $190.95, $380.95 and $475.95 in either material.

Can I print on both sides of either one?

No. Mesh and vinyl banners are both printed on one side only. Check which side faces out before you hang it, since the words must read the right way from where people will stand.

How much does a solid vinyl banner weigh?

A solid 13 oz vinyl banner weighs about 13 ounces per square yard. A 6 by 3 foot banner is about 1.6 pounds, and an 8 by 4 foot banner is about 2.9 pounds. Pick hooks, clips or rope rated for at least that weight. These figures are for solid vinyl only.

Can a fence banner be made in solid vinyl?

Yes. The fence lengths, 8, 10, 20 and 25 feet long and each 6 feet tall, also come in solid vinyl at the same price. On a long open fence, mesh is the usual pick, because a long solid sheet catches a lot of wind. Either way, tie every grommet.

How long does shipping take?

Banners ship in 1 to 2 business days. Ground shipping then takes 2 to 5 business days, and we cannot promise an arrival date, so order early enough to cover those days. Shipping is $9.99, and free on orders of $99 or more.
